No, this is not going to be a culinary review of lessor known recipes of Mrs. Instead it is going to be an essay short I hope of an image I have formed about certain habits associated with my readings involving the UK and Irish themes. I think this association can also be suggested in UK and Irish themed television. What brought this on you ask? I am currently reading a modern Irish murder mystery and this ‘comfort food’ image keeps pooping up.
Which is perfectly fine with me because it is one I enjoy. Now it probably must be said that my ‘comfort food’ images and yours may not be the same, and probably aren’t. How does this relate to the Canon of Sherlock Holmes? I know that my reading of the Canon as always been more about the images within the stories that Watson verbally illustrates, and not with the mysteries themselves.

Collier’s Weekly, September 26, The Strand Magazine, October First book appearance in The Return of Sherlock Holmes, IT was in the spring of the year that all London was interested, and the fashionable world dismayed, by the murder of the Honourable Ronald Adair under most unusual and inexplicable circumstances. The public has already learned those particulars of the crime which came out in the police investigation; but a good deal was suppressed upon that occasion, since the case for the prosecution was so overwhelmingly strong that it was not necessary to bring forward all the facts.
Only now, at the end of nearly ten years, am I allowed to supply those missing links which make up the whole of that remarkable chain. The crime was of interest in itself, but that interest was as nothing to me compared to the inconceivable sequel, which afforded me the greatest shock and surprise of any event in my adventurous life. Even now, after this long interval, I find myself thrilling as I think of it, and feeling once more that sudden flood of joy, amazement, and incredulity which utterly submerged my mind.
Another incident on the first few pages of the story that I found interesting was how Holmes offered an asthmatic a cigarette. Although definitely a no-no now a days, in Holmes time was it thought a cigarette would help ones breathing.

In part through Watson’s blog documenting their adventures, Holmes becomes a reluctant celebrity with the press reporting on his cases and eccentric personal life.
Both ordinary people and the British government ask for his help. Although the series depicts a variety of crimes and perpetrators, Holmes’ conflict with nemesis Jim Moriarty Andrew Scott is a recurring feature. Molly Hooper Louise Brealey , a pathologist at St. Bart’s Hospital , occasionally assists Holmes in his cases. Production[ edit ] Conception and development[ edit ] Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock Holmes fans with experience of adapting or using Victorian literature for television, devised the concept of the series.

Thursday, March 14, A Study in Pastiche I was thrilled to see a title by Neil Gaiman on my English Literature syllabus. Gaiman is an utterly fabulous writer. If you’ve never listened to him narrate one of his works on audiobook, you are missing out ladies–his voice is magic! The Graveyard Book and Coraline are my favorites. The story is, in fact, a Sherlock Holmes pastiche. A pasti-what, you say? Well, that was precisely my reaction, too, as I was previously unfamiliar with the pastiche [pa-steesh].
