Granted, Gnostics are not a majority of Christians. Gnosticism also shares key characteristics with mystical Judaism, even Buddhism. Fundamentalist Christians in particular seem to regard it as some sort of disreputable, possibly dangerous or infectious sibling best locked away from polite society. And yet, like the orthodoxy that succeeded the first sects and ultimately branched into what we know today as mainstream Christianity, Gnosticism looked to Jesus, Paul, and the Bible as sources of understanding about the nature of man, God, Christ, and salvation.
How, then, did orthodoxy come to reject a stream of religious thought that flows from the same well as Catholicism and Protestantism? Because few nowadays are familiar with even the basic tenets of Gnosticism, misunderstanding attaches freely to the faith.

It is not my aim to embark on the process of comparative religion. The journey I wish to take you on is my own: My Christian Background I grew up as an active participant in a non-denominational Protestant church in rural Michigan. At this same church I met a woman who would, in , become my wife.
My father, a music pastor and missionary, along with my mother, led their five children, of whom I am the fourth, to faith in Christ.

Or have you just given up on it all? If you answered yes to any of these questions, don’t despair! There is a solution for you! We have one thing in common: As societal changes have occurred over the last 50 years, more people are divorced or separated than before World War II.
According to the Census, almost 46 percent of Americans over age 15 are divorced, separated, or widowed or have never been married. Regretfully, this is also reflected in many Orthodox parishes and jurisdictions. Orthodox Ireland by Vladimir de Beer, Belfast In this essay we will attempt to sketch the historical background of the early Irish Church, demonstrate its close relation to the Orthodox Church, introduce some of the most popular Irish saints, and conclude with a brief overview of Irish monasticism and theology. Historical background It is generally believed that St Patrick brought the Christian Faith to Ireland, his traditional title being Apostle of the Irish.
There must therefore have been numbers of Christians in Ireland by the time St Patrick arrived in the following year. It seems likely that St Patrick was also sent to Ireland to combat the Pelagian heresy, the Irish Church being suspected of Pelagian tendencies at the time. Having said as much, it is nevertheless a fact that Ireland at that time was still overwhelmingly pagan, with most of the population practising a nature-based religion that was administered by elders called druids.
A hundred years after St Patrick, the Christian Faith was still only established in parts of the island.

For about three years, Jesus traveled with 12 appointed disciples, teaching large groups of people and performing what witnesses described as miracles. Some of the most well-known miraculous events included raising a dead man named Lazarus from the grave, walking on water and curing the blind.
Some of the main themes that Jesus taught, which Christians later embraced, include: Love your neighbor as yourself. Forgive others who have wronged you. Ask God for forgiveness of your sins. Jesus is the Messiah and was given the authority to forgive others. Repentance of sins is essential.

Edit Orthodox Christians believe in a single God who is both three and one triune: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, “one in essence and undivided”. The Holy Trinity is three “unconfused” distinct divine persons hypostases , with no overlap or modality among them, who share one divine essence ousia —uncreated, immaterial and eternal. In discussing God’s relationship to his creation a distinction is made between God’s eternal essence and uncreated energies, though it is understood that this distinction is artificial and that there is no real separation in God.
Energies and essence are both inseparably God. This distinction is used by theologians to explain how it is that God can be both transcendent His “essence” lies outside and infinitely distant from his creation , while at the same time he can touch his creation His “uncreated energies” interact with His creation.

The Greek-speaking Mediterranean region was a powerhouse for the Early Church, producing many revered Church Fathers as well as those who became labelled as heresiarchs , such as Nestorius. The two schools dominated the theological controversies of the first centuries of Christian theology. Whereas Antioch traditionally focused the grammatical and historical interpretation of Scripture and developed a dyophysite christology , Alexandria was much influenced by neoplatonism , using an allegorical interpretation and developing miaphysitism.
Christians experienced sporadic persecutions in both political spheres. Translation of the scriptures into Syriac began early in this region, with a Jewish group probably non-rabbinic producing a translation of the Hebrew Bible becoming the basis of the Church of the Easts Christian Peshitta. Eusebius credits Mark the Evangelist as the bringer of Christianity to Egypt, and manuscript evidence shows that the faith was firmly established there by the middle of the 2nd century.
Although the Greek-speaking community of Alexandria dominated the Egyptian church, speakers of native Coptic and many bilingual Christians were the majority. From the early 4th century, at the latest, the monastic movement emerged in the Egyptian desert, led by Anthony and Pachomius see Desert Fathers. Later that decade, Eusebius 6: Some scholars have followed hints in Eusebius and Jerome that Philip the Arab , the son of an Arab sheikh , may have been the first Christian Roman Emperor.
However, evidence to support this theory is thin. The Ghassanid tribe were important Christian foederati of Rome, while the Lakhmids were an Arab Christian tribe that fought for the Persians. Although the Hejaz was never a stronghold of Arab Christianity, there are reports of Christians around Mecca and Yathrib before the advent of Islam.
